Description from the seller

Collection of 4 Antique Japanese Kanna Plane Blades – Traditional Carpenter's Tools

Item Description

This lot consists of four traditional Japanese kanna plane blade sets, used in Japanese woodworking and carpentry.

The collection includes four large forged plane blades together with their corresponding chip breakers (uragane). These tools reflect the long tradition of Japanese hand-tool craftsmanship, where laminated steel cutting edges were combined with softer backing metal to achieve durability, precision, and exceptional cutting performance.

Japanese kanna blades are highly regarded among woodworkers, tool collectors, and enthusiasts of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Beyond their practical function, they are also appreciated as examples of Japanese metalworking culture and artisan tool-making traditions.

The blades show signs of age, storage wear, oxidation, rust, and previous use consistent with old workshop tools. They have not been cleaned or restored in order to preserve their original condition.

The lot is offered as a collection of traditional Japanese woodworking tools and as found.

Condition Note

The seller is not a specialist in Japanese woodworking tools.

No professional assessment has been made regarding steel type, maker attribution, restoration history, sharpening condition, or usability.

Rust, oxidation, wear, scratches, and age-related imperfections are present.

The items are sold as found and in their current condition.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.

Historical Background

Japanese kanna (woodworking planes) occupy a unique position in traditional woodworking culture.

Unlike Western planes, Japanese planes are pulled toward the user, allowing for exceptional control and fine finishing. The forged blades are often constructed using laminated steel techniques developed through centuries of Japanese blacksmithing traditions.

Today, vintage kanna blades are collected worldwide by woodworkers, tool historians, craftsmen, and collectors of Japanese folk tools and industrial heritage.
