Ernest Deharme, Chemins de fer. Superstructure. Atlas, illustrated edition in French, 1890, 200 pages, half‑leather binding, with folded plates and plates out of the text, 73 + 31 plates.
Description from the seller
An important technical atlas devoted to railway engineering in the second half of the nineteenth century, published as the illustrated complement to the treatise “Chemins de fer. Superstructure” by Ernest Deharme.
The work collects a vast iconographic apparatus consisting of lithographed technical plates, many folded and large-format, depicting railway networks, swing bridges, French and foreign stations, classification yards, locomotives, railway wheels, level crossings, service buildings and construction details of the railway superstructure.
E. Deharme, Chemins de fer. Superstructure. Atlas. Paris, Librairie polytechnique Baudry et C., s.d. [1890].
73 + 31 plates. Copy incomplete: missing plate no. 48.
Interesting copy belonging to engineer A. Papin, as evidenced by the ex libris stamp “A. Papin Ingénieur E.C.P.” inside the volume and by the name shown on the spine. The abbreviation E.C.P. most likely refers to the École Centrale de Paris, heir of the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, institution indicated in the plates as the author Ernest Deharme’s affiliation. The provenance is therefore particularly interesting for the link between the author of the work and its owner.
Pages in good condition. Some plates show small marginal tears and limited losses, not compromising the legibility of the drawings (the folded plate with the largest tear has been photographed). Usual signs of use and time.
Volume bound in green half-leather contemporary with gold-stamped title on the spine and marbled boards. White endpapers.
