Description from the seller
Francisco Gisbert Carbonell
Alcoy, 1866-1901
Still life with ceramic, bottle and fruits
Oil on panel
Signed and dated 1889
Oil on panel by the Alcoy painter Francisco Gisbert Carbonell (Alcoy, 1866-1901), signed and dated 1889, depicting a careful still life with ceramics, a bottle, fruits and domestic objects. The composition brings together a dark bottle, ceramic pieces, a decorative plate, onions and small vegetal elements, arranged on a light surface against a warm background of reddish-brown tones.
The work is placed within the tradition of late 19th-century Spanish still life, with special attention to the material qualities of the objects and to the compositional balance. Gisbert Carbonell builds an intimate, domestic scene, where each element has its own plastic value: the glossy surface of the ceramic, the volume of the fruits, the dark silhouette of the bottle, and the ornamental richness of the plate in the background.
Stylistically, the meticulous treatment of the objects and the careful arrangement of light stand out. The palette combines ochres, earth tones, reddish, blacks and golds, creating a warm and elegant atmosphere. The contrast between the clarity of the lower plane and the dark depth of the background reinforces the presence of the main elements and gives depth to the composition.
The work is especially interesting for its date, 1889, which places it in the artist’s early years, within a pictorial context still linked to late naturalism and the taste for high-quality still life. The precision in representation, the decorative sense and the orderly composition reveal a painting of notable workmanship and sensitivity.
The scene also has a marked Mediterranean character, visible in the ceramics, the warm tones and the choice of ordinary objects treated with pictorial dignity. It is not merely decorative still life, but a composition of great charm, where popular elements gain artistic presence.
The conservation status can be assessed in the photographs, which form part of the description. It is recommended to examine the images carefully to assess the general condition of the painting and its frame.
It is presented framed with an antique gilded frame of substantial presence, with visible signs of use, wear, chips and age-related wear. The frame is sent as a gift along with the work.
A piece of great artistic and collector interest, especially attractive to lovers of 19th-century Spanish still life, Alcoy painting, the Valencian school and still lifes with traditional ceramics.
