Title: Frontal Gazes
The work constitutes the perfect compositional and conceptual counterpart to the artist’s previous painting, evolving the narrative from an intimate profile interaction into a powerful frontal double portrait. Also in this canvas, the scene is dominated by a monochrome background of intense scarlet red, laid down with a vibrant and desaturated texture that heightens the drama of the foreground subjects.
At the center of the composition, slightly elevated, emerges the frontal face of the young woman. Her gaze, fixed directly on the viewer, is magnetic: the light blue eyes are framed by smudged makeup and long, defined lashes. The black raven-cut bob, enriched by a wispy fringe, frames the perfect oval of the face. The pallid skin starkly contrasts with the intense, sculptural blush on the cheeks and with the full lips, painted a vivid red and slightly ajar, revealing a hint of the teeth. The high black collar dress blends with the base of the canvas, creating a solid pyramidal structure.
At the bottom, overlapped with the woman’s bust, the black cat stands in the foreground, also depicted frontally. The dark fur features soft anthracite shading that gives volume and three-dimensionality to the animal. Its eyes, a deep golden yellow, almost glassy, mirror the frontal gaze of the woman, creating a hypnotic doubling for the observer. The white, thin whiskers fan out, adding a vivid realist detail.
Compared to the first work, the relational dynamic changes: there is no longer a linear tension between the two subjects, but rather a symbiotic complicity directed outward.
