◆What is Nodate?
Nodate is the Japanese practice of taking the tea ceremony outside — into nature, on travels, or simply to a favourite quiet spot. Japan's rich seasonal culture, from spring cherry blossoms to autumn foliage, inspires matcha lovers to brew a bowl wherever beauty is found: in a park, on a hiking trail, in a hotel room, or at any moment calling for mindful pause. This set is designed exactly for that purpose.

◆What makes this set special?
Everything needed to prepare and enjoy a bowl of matcha is contained within a single woven basket — a beautifully functional example of Japanese minimalist design. The chawan (tea bowl), chasen (whisk), natsume (tea caddy), and chashaku (tea scoop) fit together like a set of Russian dolls: each piece has its place, and nothing is wasted.
The chawan is a compact tabi-jawan (travel bowl), slightly smaller and lighter than a standard tea ceremony bowl, making it ideal for portability. The delicate bamboo whisk is stored safely inside its own protective bamboo tube (chasen-tsutsumi), ensuring the fine tines are never damaged in transit — a thoughtful and practical detail that speaks to the craftsmanship of the whole set.
The centerpiece chawan features a striking black glaze (kuro-yu). The lower half is left in unglazed cream-coloured clay, decorated with painted motifs including a large flowing pale design, circular motifs in red and blue, and small floral-like accents — possibly including a stylised plum blossom (ume). A potter's seal is impressed on the foot ring (kodai), indicating this is the work of an individual ceramic artist, though the artist has not been identified.

Prepare hot water in a flask or thermos before heading out
Place approximately one teaspoon (2 scoops with the chashaku) of matcha powder into the chawan
Pour a small amount of hot water (approximately 70–80ml, around 80°C)
Whisk briskly with the chasen in a zigzag motion until a light foam forms
Sit back, breathe, and enjoy your matcha in the moment
