Afghan lapis lazuli Necklace - Afghanistan - 1990-2000

This Afghan lapis lazuli necklace features hand-shaped rice-shaped barrel beads, each bearing the subtle curves and gentle wear marks of traditional handcrafting. The smooth, patinated surface of the stones carries the warm glow of age, a hallmark of vintage pieces worn and loved over time. The lapis exhibits the rich, deep "royal blue" hue for which Afghan lapis is renowned — its base colour is saturated and velvety, naturally flecked with tiny golden pyrite inclusions that shimmer like scattered starlight. Some beads also show delicate natural calcite veining, with an understated, authentic lustre free of the harsh artificial brightness of dyed stones. Between the lapis beads, warm amber-hued vintage glass spacer beads are set. Their soft golden tone balances the cool intensity of the blue, harmonizing beautifully with the antique character of the necklace while protecting the stones from abrasion — a classic touch in traditional beaded jewellery. The necklace is finished with a hand-braided adjustable cotton cord fastener, woven in a classic spiral pattern, with a naturally aged, earthy patina. The full length of the necklace allows it to be worn as a single long strand or wrapped multiple times as a bracelet, offering versatile styling options.
