of humorous and popular tales from the late
Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Schwänke
indicates burlesque tales, jests, licentious
or satirical stories, often built on deceptions, double
meanings and social reversals.
The work was conceived by Hans Erich Blaich
(who used the pseudonym “Dr. Owlglaß”).
The collection does not tell a single story,
it is an anthology of episodes drawn from the ancient
German narrative tradition. It includes texts by authors such as Johann Pauli,
Jörg Wickram, Frey, Montanus and Kirchhof.
