A 1940–1950 Art Deco low chair in solid oak with a handwoven rush seat, attributed to Charles Dudouyt, measuring 67 cm high, 47 cm wide, 42 cm deep, seating height 27 cm, and weighing 8 kg in good condition with small signs of aging.
Description from the seller
A charming low fireplace chair in solid oak, attributed to Charles Dudouyt, with a newly woven rush seat.
This is not a children’s chair, although just from seeing pictures are often mistaken for one. It is a low adult chair, made to sit close to the fire, it has a wide and robust stance, seat, heavy legs and a strong, grounded presence.
The chair has that wonderful French rustic-modern character Dudouyt is loved for: strong oak, honest construction, a low and generous posture, and a design that feels both humble and intentional. It is the kind of chair that belongs close to a fireplace, in a library corner or in a quiet bedroom, where its warm oak and handwoven rush bring exactly the right amount of texture and soul.
The frame has been refinished, allowing the grain and depth of the oak to come forward beautifully. The rush seat has been renewed, so the chair is fresh, clean and ready to use, while still keeping the spirit and presence of the original piece.
The chair shows visible traces of age, including old woodworm marks in the oak. These have been treated by freezing and have shown no return during long-term storage. Structurally the chair is stable and in good restored vintage condition.
A poetic and useful little chair: modest in scale, rich in atmosphere, and very easy to place in both modern and more rustic interiors.
