Description from the seller
Title: Faun with Panpipes — Bronze sculpture in lost-wax casting inspired by Pompeian art
Short description:
Bronze sculpture depicting a Faun with panpipes, inspired by drawings unearthed during the Pompeii excavations and by a fresco preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. A work of great mythological charm and decorative appeal, handcrafted in Italy.
Extended description:
This sculpture represents the Faun, a nature deity of the Greco-Roman world, depicted with goat legs, a tail and a human torso, intent on playing the panpipes. The work draws inspiration from Pompeian iconographic testimonies — drawings and frescoes — that restitute the ancient imagination linked to music, the forest, and pastoral life.
Central figure of Greek mythology, the Faun is also known as Pan, god of fields, pastures and forests. A symbol of freedom, instinctive joy, and primordial vitality, he embodies the wildest and most fertile aspect of nature, oscillating between benevolence and inquietude, celebration and mystery.
The sculpture is made in bronze using the lost-wax casting technique, a traditional method that allows high definition of details and a strong plastic presence. The base, also in bronze, ensures stability and material continuity of the work.
Technical features:
Material: bronze, lost-wax casting
Base: bronze, lost-wax casting
Overall dimensions (H×W×D): 71 × 36 × 24.5 cm
Base height: 18 cm
Weight: about 14 kg
Production: artisanal, Italy
Mythological context and historical curiosities:
According to myth, the Faun did not dwell on Olympus but in woods and fields, where his presence could frighten travelers with sudden voices and unsettling sounds. Several traditions recount his origins: one says he is the son of Zeus and the nymph Callisto.
God of fertility, unbridled freedom, and vital instinct, the Faun is also attributed with the invention of the flute. Legend tells that the nymph Syrinx, to escape his advances, asked help from the Naiads and was transformed into a reed. From the sound produced by the wind through the reeds, Pan drew inspiration to create the musical instrument that bears his name.
Conditions and maintenance:
To preserve the sculpture’s beauty, regular cleaning with a soft, dry cloth is recommended. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could alter the patina. If needed, a bronze-specific paraffin wax may be applied to revive the surface.
Notes:
- Decorative work with strong symbolic and mythological impact
- Ideal for collectors, classical or contemporary interiors, and representative spaces
- Professional shipping and packaging
