Material and Technique: The case is made of silver 84 (a Russian standard of 0.875 purity) and decorated with the niello technique, which consists of inlays of a black metal alloy to create the design.
The interior of the case may have originally been gilded.
Design: The main feature is a scene engraved in the center of the lid depicting a troika, a traditional Russian sleigh drawn by three horses, driven by a coachman with passengers. The rest of the case features an elaborate and fine floral or scrollwork design.
