Batak sword - Piso Gaja Dompak - Karo Batak - Indonesia

Piso goluk taka of the Karo-Batak. Century provenance: Sumatra, Typical, slightly curved, single-edged blade with a triangular section, with a small, three-pointed rest near the base. Wooden hilt carved in sanalenggam style with an anthropomorphic figure. The gaja dompak piso knife is a weapon of a great hero in Indonesia, namely Sisingamangaraja XII. The weapon he used when fighting Dutch colonialism in the land of Batak. This weapon is an heirloom of kings who are believed to have supernatural powers. Piso gaja dompak is a weapon that is shorter than a sword, but longer than a dagger. The gaja dompak piso weapon was not made to kill people, but rather as a carrier of supernatural powers. The hilt represents a batak figure in the typical podang shape, and the languets fits into an openworked space of the scabbard mouth. Beautiful old, forged blade, with a clear pattern visible. Some surface rust which I didn’t want to remove to preserve authenticity. Will come of easily, no rust pitting or worse. The wood is difficult to determine my best ques is rubberwood (what actually is no wood) and has a beautiful patina. Beautiful rare item not often seen, true collector’s item! Although this piece shows signs of use it has fantastic rich decoration. The patina, which indicates its considerable age, combined with its elegant design, makes it an ethnographic object of great interest.
