Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
A black wooden box from Nepal, 20 cm high, 17 cm wide and 14.5 cm deep, dating to the 1970s–1980s, with hand-sculpted and painted Citipati skulls, offered in used condition with probable small missing pieces.
Description from the seller
A distinctive black wooden box with Citipati skulls carved and hand-painted.
In Tibetan Buddhism and Vajrayana, the Citipati (also known as Kinkara or Lord of the Cemetery) is a protective deity depicted as a pair of dancing skeletons, whose skulls represent one of the deepest symbols of Himalayan tradition. Unlike Western culture, where the skeleton evokes fear or finality, in Tibet the Citipati skull holds positive and transformative spiritual meanings.
The box, square in shape, perhaps used for offerings, is 20 cm high and 17 cm wide at the base, 14.5 cm across the top. It dates to the second half of the 20th century, probably the 1970s or 1980s.
An item suitable for a collection of Himalayan art/crafts or for a curiosity cabinet.
It will be adequately packed and shipped with postal tracking.
