Original lacquered woven bamboo offering box from Myanmar (Hsun-It), 40 cm high with a 37.5 cm diameter, composed of seven interlocking elements, sold without a stand and sourced from a private collection.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
Ancienne Hsun it, a woven and lacquered bamboo offering box composed of 7 interlocking elements, it was used by the faithful to bring food to the monasteries. The rice was placed in the large bowl, followed by the vegetables on a plate, then the fish or meat, and often tamarind candies were placed under the small upper bowl, which could serve as a ladle or a goblet. Region of Bagan, Burma, first half of the 20th century.
The name of the manufacturer is written on the top of the bowl.
40 cm in height and 37.5 cm in diameter.
Beautiful old and very decorative object with a timeless shape.
CARNET DE VOYAGE DE JEAN DUMOULIN
During my trip to the Bagan region in 2017, I had the opportunity to buy a large lot of hsun it from one of my sources, who had himself bought them from a monastery near Monywa that no longer had use for them, as plastic or metal was becoming increasingly used.
CONDITION
Good condition for an object of this age that has served for at least three generations, it bears the marks of use, which does not detract from its charm (see photos). The object could be varnished to restore its shine, but personally I prefer to leave objects in their original state.
A similar model can be found in the book, “Burma and the Art of Lacquer” by Ralph Isaacs and T. Richard Burton (see photos).
Will be carefully packed, trackable and insured shipment.
