Description from the seller
Opulent Neorococo Silver Sauce Boat with Vermeil Interior
Up for auction is an exceptionally opulent and intricately crafted sauce boat made of solid 800 silver, produced in the era of late Historicism (Neorococo) between 1880 and 1920.
Design & Execution:
The piece fascinates with its lavish, sculptural relief work. The bowl wall and the edge of the presentation stand are exceedingly richly decorated with classical rocaille motifs, S-curved C-bows, and floral designs. Notably, the masterfully pierced, asymmetrical rim of the bowl lends the historicizing design a wonderful dynamism and lightness.
Special quality feature:
The sauce boat and the accompanying underplate are historically typical connected by an original base screw. This provides absolute stability on the lord’s table. The interior of the bowl features an excellently preserved, intensely radiant interior gilding (vermeil). Historically, this served not only the luxurious appearance but also effectively protected the silver from the aggressive acids of food.
Dimensions & details:
• Total weight: approx. 282 grams
• Underplate dimensions: approx. 18.8 cm x 12.0 cm x 1.0 cm
• Sauce boat dimensions: approx. 13.0 cm x 13.0 cm (including handle) x 9.0 cm
• Hallmark: stamped with the fineness mark “800” on the foot rim of the bowl
