Pair of large porcelain baluster vases with polychrome decoration and gilding in gold, dating from the late 19th century France, around 1885–1895, each about 36 cm high and 16 cm in diameter, in excellent condition with minimal wear on the gilding.
Description from the seller
PAIR OF LARGE POLYCHROME PORCELAIN VASES WITH GOLD DECOR
France, presumably Parisian manufacture, late 19th century
Description:
Pair of large baluster vases in white porcelain, characterized by an elongated ovoid body, pronounced shoulder and flared neck ending in a lip slightly protuberant and outlined in gold.
The vases feature a richly exuberant full-field decoration executed by hand in polychromy, dominated by large naturalistic floral motifs of extraordinary freshness of execution. Distinguishing are large pink-tinged rose buds in shades of pink and yellow, large violets’ blooms and anemones in saturated and vibrant hues (orange, purple, cobalt blue).
The painting is masterfully integrated with sumptuous gilding in fine gold, applied both by brush and in relief (dorure à l'agathe). This redefines the entire surface through broad acanthus leaves illuminated and very fine scrollwork of eclectic late 19th-century taste, creating a refined texture contrast between the brilliance of the enamel and the density of the precious metal.
Under the base of both vases is visible a small circular mark impressed crudely into the body of the porcelain.
Critical Note:
The quality of the porcelain and, in particular, the virtuosity of the floral painting combined with the monumental and sculptural use of gilding, directly recall the best productions of Parisian manufactories or the satellite laboratories of Sèvres operating in the last quarter of the 19th century. During this period, inspiration from the splendors of 18th-century France (Louis XV taste and Rocaille motifs) fused with the decorative exuberance required by international Belle Époque high patronage.
Technical Details:
Material and technique: Hard-paste porcelain, white enamel, polychrome enamel painting, rich gilding in fine gold partially incised and in relief.
Provenance: France.
Period: Late 19th century (approximately 1885–1895).
Dimensions: Height 36 cm; maximum diameter 16 cm (approximate measurements).
Condition: Excellent state of preservation. The painted surface is intact; very slight and typical signs of wear to the gilding at the points of greatest relief and along the profile of the upper lip, entirely compatible with the period and use. No hairlines, chipping, or restoration detected.
