Description from the seller
Grand porcelain jug vase from Vallauris, signed with the stamp J. MASSIER VALLAURIS in the hollow beneath the base, with handwritten signature visible on the bottom of the vase
Form and decor: Flared conical silhouette on a brown annular foot, characteristic of Massier production. The cream body is adorned with a hand-incised and hand-painted scene of a three-masted sailboat navigating beneath a sky of birds, in emerald green and brown palette. A frieze of stylized foliage incised around the top of the vase, bounded by two brown threads.
Manufacture: The stamp “J MASSIER VALLAURIS” was used between 1930 and 1953, a period when Jean Clergue continued the family tradition founded by Jérôme Massier Fils (1820–1909). A piece representative of the nautical decorative style of the house.
Dimensions: 22 cm tall, neck diameter 19 cm.
Condition: Good overall. To note: a glue stain at the foot (visible without structural impact) and tiny flakes on the neck. No cracks or restoration.
Provenance: purchased at a public auction in Venette near Compiègne (80, Somme, France)
