Description from the seller

Pair of signed, numbered bookends with elephants – Green glazed ceramic – France, circa 1930

Very elegant pair of French Art Deco-style bookends dating from the 1930s, depicting two stylized elephants in emerald green glazed ceramic. Their clean design, with generous volumes and the geometric lines characteristic of Art Deco, evoke the influence of exotic arts very popular in the interwar period.

Letter "L" under a bookend, and "71" (it seems) on the other.

Very good overall condition given the age. Glaze shiny and well preserved. Note a tiny chip on the back of one of the elephants, discreet and visible in the photos. Please examine them closely, they are an integral part of the description.

Dimensions (per piece)

Height: 14 cm
Width: 10 cm
Length: 15.5 cm
Weight

768 g per bookend
1,536 kg for the pair

This decorative pair will find a perfect place in a library, a desk, or a collection devoted to 20th-century decorative arts. A beautiful piece of charm, representative of French Art Deco taste for stylized animal forms and enamels in deep colors.
