WMF Art Nouveau decorative tray, circa 1910–1920, made of plated metal in Germany.
Description from the seller
WMF ART NOUVEAU LARGE DECORATIVE TRAY ALCHETYPE OF FLORA SILVER-PLATED METAL CONTRASTED GERMANY c.1900
Magnificent Art Nouveau decorative tray produced by the prestigious German house WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) around 1900-1910.
The central scene represents an elegant allegory of Flora, Roman goddess of flowers, spring and the rebirth of nature. The female figure appears advancing among lush vegetation while pouring water from a vessel, a classic symbol of fertility, abundance and renewal of life.
The composition is surrounded by a rich floral relief decoration where flowers, leaves and birds harmonize with the main figure, creating a scene full of movement and artistic refinement, characteristic of the best German Art Nouveau or Jugendstil.
The sculpture quality of the modeling is particularly notable, evident in the treatment of the face, the folds of the garment and the complex vegetal ornamentation. The result is a piece with great decorative impact and marked elegance, representative of European decorative arts from the early 20th century.
The tray preserves the original WMF contrasts visible on the reverse, including the OX mark and manufacturing numeration. Made in silver-plated metal (silver bath) over a metal alloy, according to the techniques used by the German manufactory during the modernist period.
For its artistic quality, size and decorative appeal it constitutes an excellent piece for collectors of WMF, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil and European decorative arts.
