Description from the seller
An armillary sphere is a celestial sphere with metal rings that represent the main circles of the sky.
The armillary sphere was invented by Eratosthenes in 255 BCE. The name of the instrument comes from the Latin “armilla,” meaning bracelet. Usually, the Earth, then the Sun, are placed at the center of the metal rings.
The planes of the horizon, the meridian and the celestial equator are represented by solid circles. The armillary sphere was designed as an instrument for determining position or time.
Renaissance scientists often depicted themselves with an armillary sphere, a symbol of wisdom and knowledge. In Christian iconography, the armillary sphere is the attribute of astronomy, one of the seven liberal arts and a symbol of the universe. This instrument appears on the flag of Portugal.
