Description from the seller
[Product Overview]
A beautiful thin tea vessel (natsume) used in Japan's traditional tea ceremony. The high-quality black lacquer body is adorned with a splendid gold maki-e pattern depicting auspicious motifs.
[Design and artistry]
The most captivating feature of this item is the exquisite maki-e on the inside of the lid (gold powder sprinkled to create the design). The inner lid features a detailed depiction of a Minogame, a sea-turtle that swims among waves.
Minogame: a turtle with long-growing algae on its shell, in Japan regarded as a symbol of longevity that lives for ten thousand years. It has long been cherished as a highly auspicious motif.
Waves: around the turtle there are dynamic gold-embellished wave crests, and in the background fine gold powder (a texture resembling a dimpled finish) is scattered, giving a refined luster.
The exterior is a calm, glossy black lacquer. The rim where the lid meets the main body features a gold line that helps to frame the piece (you can confirm in the image).
[Condition]
As shown in the listed images, both the exterior and the interior maki-e are in very good condition and retain a beautiful sheen. There are no major scratches, chips, or flaking.
*As this is an antique/vintage item, there may be extremely tiny signs of wear due to aging. Please refer to the images for details.
[Cultural Value]
This natsume is not only a tea ceremony utensil but also a refined art piece embodying the essence of Japanese traditional crafts. The Minogame motif, which wishes longevity, is highly appreciated for celebratory occasions and as a gift. It is recommended with confidence for those who enjoy tea ceremony, or collectors of Japanese traditional crafts (lacquerware, maki-e)."
