Description from the seller
Grand Art Nouveau Jewelry Box in Pewter - Signed by Albert Cheret. Exceptional early 20th-century powder box with high relief of wild fruits, decorative sides, and the artistically cast monogram. Circa 1900.
Magnificent circular jewelry box or powder box from the Art Nouveau period, made in French pewter of superior artistic casting. This piece stands out notably from standard models of the era due to the great complexity of its execution, its high sculptural volume, and the prominence of its author, the renowned French sculptor Albert Cheret.
The lid features a superb relief with botanical inspiration depicting branches of wild fruits (blackberries or hawthorns) along with their characteristic trilobed leaves and delicate flowers. Cheret's work exhibits astonishing three-dimensionality: the fruits and leaf venation emerge with realistic, organic volume, faithful to the guidelines of the Belle Époque. The handwritten signature of the author is elegantly incised on the lower quadrant of the lid.
Unlike other pieces of simpler manufacture, this model features refined work on the sides of the lower body, ornamented all around with a continuous frieze of garlands and repousse botanical motifs, which doubles its artistic and decorative value.
Country of Origin: France. Artist: Sculptor Albert Cheret (active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, renowned for his superb metal and bronze sculptural works in the Modernist style).
Marks and Seals: At the base is clearly stamped the inscription "ÉTAINS D'ART" accompanied by the official monogram of casting "AC" (artist's initials) inscribed within a diamond, guaranteeing the authenticity and art production of the piece. Material: Étain d'art pewter.
Very good vintage condition. Shows a natural aged patina, deep and uncleaned, highly valued by collectors because it highlights the raised reliefs of the design. Structurally solid, the clasp fits properly.
The superb composition of the fruits in high relief and the clarity of Albert Cheret's handwritten signature on the metal are evident. The ornamental sides show in detail the magnificent perimeter frieze carved and the volumes of the lid from different angles. Authenticity marks on the base certify the cataloging of the piece with the inscription "ÉTAINS D'ART" alongside the monogram stamp "AC".
