Description from the seller
Rare Bandai Electronics FL Gun Professional Handheld Console (1982)
Description:
Attention retro gaming and 80s culture collectors! An authentic Bandai Electronics tabletop/handheld game console, model "FL Gun Professional" released in the early 1980s (1982).
This legendary model sports a futuristic V-shaped (or boomerang) design, very representative of the era's aesthetics. It features a superb VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) screen with iconic neon green graphics, much brighter and more retro than the simple LCD screens of the time.
The game plunges you into a Western/Wild West setting where you must face outlaws among the cacti.
Condition of the item:
Appearance: Very good overall condition considering its age (see photos). The plastics have not suffered major discoloration; they retain their original color and are very well preserved when kept safely and with care, and the silkscreen markings are clearly visible.
Functioning: Tested and fully functional (see photos with the screen on). The sound and the VFD display are flawless.
Power: Sold with a compatible mains adapter so you can play it right away without draining batteries. The back battery compartment is clean.
A piece of history: The era of electronic games (LSI / VFD)
In the early 1980s, before Nintendo's Game Boy phenomenon (1989), the portable video game industry was dominated by dedicated electronic games (one device = one game).
VFD technology: Unlike Nintendo's Game & Watch devices that used LCD screens that were grayish and often not backlit, Bandai chose VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) technology. These screens, derived from high-end calculator tech or automotive dashboards of the time, offered vibrant colors and emitted their own light. Playing in complete darkness became possible!
Bandai, the pioneer: The Japanese manufacturer Bandai was the undisputed king of these "tabletop consoles." With their look of a mini-arcade cabinet or a sci-fi gadget, these games were the ultimate Christmas gift in 1982/1983.
A prized piece, increasingly difficult to find in perfect working order, ideal for completing a vintage game collection or for offering a shot of pure nostalgia.
