The piece comes from an old collection of antiques in Bukovina. According to the information provided by the former owner, the mortar was purchased directly from academician Radu Grigorovici (1911–2008), full member and vice-president of the Romanian Academy, son of Gheorghe Grigorovici (1871–1950), one of the prominent personalities of historical Bukovina, the first Romanian social-democratic deputy in the Vienna Parliament, a militant for the rights of Romanians in Bukovina and a supporter of the unification of the province with Romania.
Although this provenance is not accompanied by documents, the coincidence of the engraved name "GRIGOROVICI", the year 1947 and the known route of the piece gives it a special historical and collector's interest.
The object represents not only an authentic pharmaceutical instrument of the period, but also a possible material testimony related to one of the most important intellectual families of Bukovina.
Piece recommended for collectors of:
history of pharmacy and medicine;
Bukovinian heritage;
academic and memorial objects;
bronzes and historical instruments.
