Description from the seller
Pair of sculptures, “Solomonic columns” carvings, carved, gilded and polychromed wood, 18th century – Spain
Material: Carved, gilded and polychromed wood
Period: 18th century
Country of origin: Spain
Good condition given age and use
Dimensions: 100 x 18 x 18 cm.
Magnificent pair of solomonic columns belonging to the decorative structure of an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece. These pieces would originally have been attached to the altarpiece structure, hence their ornamentation is concentrated on the visible face; on the back face you can see the carved wood, bare, without gold and barely polychromed.
The solomonic columns twist on their own axis with a serpent-like shape. Their entire surface is decorated with gold vegetal motifs on a red background and the helically braided shaft in a deep green. They are topped with an intricate Corinthian capital, full of delicate acanthus leaves curling outward. The gilding technique with gold leaf stands out for its quality.
Solomonic columns are a type of architectural column characterized by their helical, screw-like shape and decorated with vegetal motifs. This architectural style originated in 16th-century Italy and became popular in 17th and 18th-century Europe and Latin America.
