Yemeni origin, the rare foldable hanging candle lantern titled “Rara Lanterna Portacandela Sospesa e Pieghevole a Soffietto,” dates to the second half of the 20th century.
Description from the seller
Rara Lantern Lamp Two-piece Suspended and Foldable “Accordion” – Moroccan/Boho-Chic Style – 1970-1990
Description of the Lot
Fascinating decorative and hanging candle lantern, characterized by an ingenious expandable “accordion” structure that allows it to fold completely onto itself to occupy minimal space when not in use.
The object is a typical and successful example of decorative artisanal production from the second half of the 20th century (prudently datable to the 1970s–1990s), a period in which design and interior decoration in Europe strongly rediscovered the exotic charm of Oriental, North African atmospheres and Bohemian style.
Constructive and Ornamental Details:
Candle Housing and Ventilation: At the center of the structure is the original housing to safely accommodate a candle or tealight. On top of the cap is a functional hinged hatch, operable to facilitate air recirculation, heat escape, and quick ignition.
Metalworking: The upper cap and lower base are made of patinated metal (with an antique silvery finish), richly hand-worked with ornamental motifs of scrolls, raised curls, and filigree cords. The geometric heart-shaped cutouts are not only aesthetic but create evocative play of shadows and light on the walls when the candle is lit.
Decorative Elements: The metal frame is further embellished with oval and round settings hosting ornamental cabochons in warm red and orange tones (in contemporaneous glass paste or resin), recalling the aesthetics of traditional Berber and Moroccan jewelry.
The Central Body: The expandable lampshade consists of light fabric neatly sewn into horizontal panels and stretched over a core of flexible metal rings. This system allows the lantern to open and close smoothly.
Suspension: The lantern comes with its sturdy original hook and metal cord, shaped to be easily hung from a ceiling, beams, or a wall-mounted support.
Technical Sheet and Dimensions
Object: Suspended and foldable candle lantern
Estimated era: Second half of the 20th century (circa 1970s–1990s)
Style: Oriental / Moroccan / Bohemian / Boho-Chic
Materials: Patinated/silvered metal, panelled fabric, decorative cabochons in glass paste/resin
Diameter of cap: ~14 cm
Total height (extended, including hook): ~38–40 cm
Exact weight: 372 grams
Conditions: Overall good vintage condition with signs of wear and small missing parts. The accordion folding mechanism is intact and fully functional. The metal retains a beautiful patina of use that enhances the workmanship, while the fabric shows subtle warm shading due to age. Disclosure: A few minor decorative secondary elements (such as tiny cabochons or filigree details) are missing, minor defects that do not compromise structural stability nor the lantern’s great visual charm, but which attest to its history and use. (Please carefully view the detailed photo gallery, including measurements and weighing, which is an integral part of the description).
Note for buyers:
An eclectic and atmospherically rich piece of furniture, ideal for creating a warm, intimate, and relaxing light corner inside the home, in a veranda, or in a conservatory.
I guarantee thorough surface cleaning before shipping, professional shockproof packaging to protect the fabric and metal, and fast, fully trackable shipping.
