Description from the seller
Book of the king Modus' Hunt: Introduction by Alfonso de Urquijo. Codicological description by Dagmar Thoss
Published by Casariego, Madrid, 1989
Full goatskin binding, spine, blind tooling on flat panels 31x21 cm, 106 leaves
Copy no. 178 of a print run of 350 copies.
Facsimile edition of the oldest hunting treatise preserved among those written in French, which enjoyed great popularity in the Middle Ages, although the original manuscript disappeared; thirty-two different copies survive. The basis for this edition is the 10.218 of the Royal Library of Brussels, which contains magnificent miniatures, of exceptional beauty, that give a very accurate idea of how hunting was conducted 600 years ago. The book, attributed to the Norman noble Henri de Ferrières, was created for Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and its miniatures are by Girart de Roussillon and his workshop. It is printed in double column, in full color, with numerous initials and punctuation marks in polished gold on a blue and red background, and its numerous and splendid full-color miniatures, framed in fine gold, stand out for showing us hunting scenes with dogs and with birds, which graphically illustrate certain methods of hunting. Very good copy. Falconry. Hunting. Facsimiles. Bibliophilism.
