Description from the seller
PAIR OF ASYMMETRICAL CANDLESTICKS WITH CHERUB/PUTTI FIGURES
Style: Historicist / Neobaroque (inspiration from European palace art of the 17th and 18th centuries).
Period: Late 19th century to mid-20th century.
Material: Cast metal with an aged patina of solid bronze.
Composition: Pair for the table, with complementary designs and asymmetrical heights.
DESCRIPTION
Exquisite pair of individual classical-style candlesticks, characterized by an elegant structural asymmetry that gives the set a dynamic, unique character. Both pieces use the human figure as the central axis, drawing on the classical iconography of the putto or cherub as the supporting element.
Larger Candlestick (Stylized):
Features a slender, taller silhouette. The central cherub figure is shown in a dynamic pose, supported by an ornamental lower shaft with vegetal motifs and grooved reliefs. The ensemble terminates in a spectacular base of organic inspiration, carved in the shape of extended acanthus leaves with a multi-point starry profile. The upper inkstand has a flared dish for candle wax collection.
Smaller Candlestick (Compact):
With more robust proportions and lower height, this model shows the cherub in a classical Atlas pose, bearing the weight of the upper inkstand directly with both arms raised. The figure connects almost immediately to a wide, tripodal base, richly decorated with volutes and Rococo-style reliefs, which rests firmly on three ornate legs.
CONDITION
The stylized candlestick is clean and shows excellent definition in the cast reliefs, as well as a dark, well-distributed patina that enhances the piece’s volumes. The smaller candlestick presents an intense organic accumulation of melted candle wax cascading down its left side and base; this element, far from a defect, gives the piece a marked bohemian, romantic, and period character (the wax is easily removable if one wishes to restore the metal to its original state). No fractures or structural missing parts are evident to the naked eye.
