Description from the seller
Jan Cremer – Tulips of the North
In Tulips of the North Jan Cremer imagines the tension between origin and freedom. With his distinctive, powerful style he shows the restless life of an artist, full of passion, desire and international influences.
Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, so Jan’s upbringing fell entirely to his mother. Jan’s mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed in foster homes and colony houses by child protection services. In the fifties he held various jobs, served with the marines and spent some time as a sailor on the wild voyage. In 1958 he followed a few months of training at the art academy in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived for a time on Ibiza and in 1964 moved to New York. He then lived alternately in America and Europe. As a writer Cremer became famous overnight with “Ik Jan Cremer” (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. As a result, the literary quality of his authorship was not regarded highly by everyone. The novel was kept out of libraries for a long time. “Ik Jan Cremer” appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travel reports and stage works. The art of Jan Cremer consists of paintings, graphics and gouaches and often features Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in bright colors.
