Antique mechanical letter scale in brass dating to circa 1909, with a richly decorated three-face foot and a scale range up to 250 grams.
Description from the seller
Offered: Antique letter scale ca. 1909 – 250 grams – ornamental foot with 3 identical faces.
Very fine antique letter scale with a richly decorated foot. This decorative mechanical letter scale probably dates from around 1909 and is a beautiful example of early 20th-century European craftsmanship. The scale features a curved scale with a weighing range of 250 grams. On the scale marking is for 0, Gr.
The weighing mechanism is of a well-known and widely used type from this period and is firmly attached to the foot with a nut on the underside.
The foot is exceptionally richly executed and decorated with faces, floral motifs and ornaments. In particular the faces give the object a "mythological and artistic" character.
No brand was found on the cast piece, but what I could find on the internet shows an identical foot pictured in the 1909 catalog of Ph. J. Maul, which supports the dating.
Details:
• Type: mechanical letter weight
• Dating: circa 1909
• Weighing range: up to 250 grams
• Material: brass with presumably cast bronze foot
• Richly decorated three-legged foot with faces and floral motifs and ornaments
• No visible maker's mark
A particularly decorative and collectible object, very suitable for enthusiasts of antique measuring instruments, postal history, or as an elegant showpiece on a desk or in a display cabinet.
The scale device is in very good condition for its age and shows little signs of use.
