In 1937, Guernica was inspired by the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica by the German and Italian armies: an unjustified massacre, a pure act of intimidation, of cynical violence that aroused enormous indignation among world public opinion and that Picasso managed to immortalize on the canvas with a force and effectiveness such as to transform the painting into a symbol against violence and the abuses of every war.
