It comes complete with its original paulownia tomobako storage box and soft cotton wrapping cloth. The entire Natsume is finished in glossy black urushi lacquer (kuro-nuri), polished to a mirror-smooth, deep lustre — a foundational traditional technique of Japanese lacquerware. Its surface features a detailed motif of bracken, rendered in three distinct tiers of makie pigment to create natural depth and perspective: • Gold makie: Bright red-gold powder traces sunlit fern fronds, with exquisitely fine lines capturing every delicate vein; • Muted silver/toned gold makie: Pale matte metallic powder depicts distant foliage, building subtle light and shadow contrast; • Red lacquer linework: Vermillion pigment outlines the lower fern sprigs. The pairing of rich gold and deep red creates an elegant, understated colour harmony. Fronds flow naturally across the domed lid and upper body of the vessel, balanced in gentle, organic composition. Bracken holds deep symbolic meaning in Japanese traditional design, representing renewal, longevity and enduring life. Its quiet, refined aesthetic aligns perfectly with the wabi-sabi philosophy at the heart of the tea ceremony. Against the solid black lacquer base, the gold and red makie decoration delivers restrained, sophisticated luxury. Due to its age, the natsume and tomobako show natural aging and minor wear. The lacquer finish is fully intact, with no cracks or peeling. Overall condition is good for its age.
