Description from the seller
Wilhelm Kagel / WIKP - Two hand-turned Bavarian studio-ceramics Jugs with sgraffito decoration - ca. 1950–1960
Offered is a decorative set of two hand-turned ceramic jugs with sgraffito decoration, attributed to Wilhelm Kagel / WIKP, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Both pieces are executed in warm brown- and amber-toned earth colors and feature carefully incised and hand-painted decoration. The decoration consists of horizontal bands, cross motifs, geometric line work, stylized flowers and floral shapes. Through the combination of the bulbous silhouette, the artisanal surface, and the rhythmic sgraffito decoration, the jugs have a distinct Mid-Century / folk art appearance.
The larger jug has a classic bulb shape with a short foot, wide pouring rim, and a large handle. The smaller jug has a more squat rounded form, with integrated handle and an asymmetrical opening. On the bottom of one of the jugs is still the original label stating “Handgedreht – Handgemalt.” On both undersides a WK monogram is visible.
Wilhelm Kagel senior was a German decorative painter, studio potter, and potter, born in 1867 in Mecklenburg. He settled in Partenkirchen and built there an artisanal ceramics workshop. The workshop was later continued by the next generation, including Wilhelm/Willy Kagel junior, whose ceramics from the 1950s–70s are often recognized by hand-turned forms, warm glazes, and incised decoration.
The Makers Guild +1
The set is in generally good vintage condition, with normal age- and use-related signs appropriate to its age. No major damage visible in the photos. The photos are part of the description.
