A 20th‑century brass, wood and metal ceiling light of Art Nouveau style from the Netherlands, 75 cm high and deep with a 15 cm width, fitted with three supports and an original glass dome, electrified and supplied complete with its tripodal frame featuring three stylised ships and female figures.
Description from the seller
Superb framework for a library or drawing-room chandelier from the late 19th century (dated 1892 on the hull of one of the ships). This rare piece falls within the Historism style (Neo-Renaissance), characterized by very detailed and openwork brass casting.
The main decoration is remarkable: the central turned wood body and brass is surrounded by a tripodal structure adorned with three magnificent caravels or stylized ships (reminiscent of Christopher Columbus's ships, a very popular theme in 1892 for the quincentennial of the discovery of America). On each ship sits a sculpted female figure (allegory or figurehead).
Initially designed as a pendant or oil lamp (library lamp with a counterweight/raise-and-lower mechanism), the central reservoir was formerly electrified (standard screw-base socket).
The chandelier is sold complete with its original glass dome/shade.
