Description from the seller
This is an oil painting by Willem Imandt, depicting Cape Town.
Dimensions: 41 x 50 cm
Dimensions with frame: 50 x 60 cm
In 1916, Imandt resigned from the colonial service; until his retirement in 1929, at the age of 47, he worked as chief schoolteacher and drawing teacher within Catholic education in the Dutch East Indies. Upon his return to Europe in 1929, the Bos art dealership organized a large-scale solo exhibition that lasted four months, in which many works were sold.
Imandt then settled with his family in Sint-Gillis-Waas, a short distance from his birthplace in Belgium, where he moved into a spacious house with a studio that he named Insulinde. He returned as a wealthy man from the Dutch East Indies, where he had grown into one of the best-known Western painters.
In 1954, at the age of 72, Imandt received a retrospective exhibition in the halls of Hoogovens.
