Set of two antique black lacquered wooden sewing boxes from Paris, dating to ca. 1900–1910.
Description from the seller
Unique set of 2 antique lacquered sewing boxes (boîtes à couture) 'Japonisme' - C.B. / E.P. Paris - ca. 1900
Description:
Beautiful and extremely rare set of two antique French sewing boxes (boîtes à couture), crafted around 1900 for the renowned Société Française de Cotons à Coudre (C.B. / E.P. Paris). Unlike the more common tin variants, these luxury pieces are entirely made of beautifully black lacquered wood (lacquer) with refined polychrome and gold decorations in the then wildly popular 'Japonisme' style.
Box 1: Features a splendid, detailed Japanese scene with figures in traditional dress (kimono), surrounded by a majestic phoenix, blossoms, and chrysanthemums.
Box 2: Is adorned with a lively Eastern procession with a large ceremonial drum and bamboo motifs.
A fantastic detail is the original, perfectly preserved paper label on the underside reading: "HELIOTROPES ASSORTIS". This proves that these luxury boxes originally contained an assortment of sewing threads subtly perfumed with the then very exclusive, vanilla-like scent of the heliotrope flower.
Condition:
In excellent antique condition. Extremely rare for wooden lacquered objects of this age: the boxes have no damage, no cracks in the wood, and the lids close perfectly. The colors and gold accents have remained fantastically bright with only minimal, characteristic antique patina.
Specifications:
