Description from the seller
Hermès Under the Waves scarf – red, Great Barrier Reef, 90 cm
Hermès Under the Waves – the scarf Alice Shirley designed in 2016 as a tribute to the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland in northern Australia. The largest living organic structure on Earth, on UNESCO's World Heritage list, rendered here the way it actually works – an endless ballet of forms and colours, with a sea turtle swimming to Milman Islet to lay her eggs, a leafy sea dragon hiding among the seaweed fronds, a mandarin fish hunting for plankton. Each owes its existence to the fragile balance of this ecosystem.
Shirley is among the most recognisable Hermès designers of the last decade — her carrés combine scientific precision with a wild, illustrative imagination. The red palette of this version gives the reef a different context than the classic ocean blues. It changes the rhythm: not the quiet of underwater, but coral in full daylight.
