Description from the seller
Centerpiece Art Nouveau WMF – Naturalistic Walnut Composition
Exceptional Art Nouveau centerpiece in silvered metal (silvered brass), crafted by the renowned Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF), one of Europe’s most prestigious manufactories at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, renowned for the excellence of its art metalwork and the quality of its collaborations with the era’s leading designers.
This work is distinguished by a sculptural composition of remarkable naturalism, featuring a walnut opened into two shells, treated as two generous vessels with subtly hammered surfaces, evoking the organic texture of the fruit. From their junction rises a branch of walnut finely chiselled, unfolding leaves and branches with the precision and sensitivity characteristic of the Art Nouveau vegetal language.
The vertical thrust of the central stem, balanced by the horizontality of the two bowls, gives the whole an elegant and perfectly controlled dynamic. The basins rest on small discrete feet, enhancing visual lightness and underscoring mastery of volumes and proportions, a hallmark of WMF craftsmanship.
The piece is signed “WMF” at the base of the stem, attesting to its authenticity. It features a beautiful antique patina, rich and nuanced, which highlights the reliefs, leaf veins, and metalwork, while indicating excellent condition, with no deformation or visible restoration.
Dimensions:
– Height: 26 cm
– Width: 34.5 cm
– Depth: 19 cm
A true manifest work of Art Nouveau, this centerpiece combines decorative function with sculptural ambition. It stands as a premier collectible, perfectly at home in a major decorative arts collection, a museum display, or an exceptional interior seeking a symbolic, architected work that is both poetic and architectural.
