Sawankhalok large lobed round stoneware dish with celadon glaze from Thailand, dating to the 14th–16th century (c. 1400–1450), 10 cm high and 30 cm in diameter, with incised decoration under a translucent green glaze and minor wear including a small edge chip and restoration.
Description from the seller
Large celadon stoneware dish from Sukhothai / Si Satchanalai (Sawankhalok)
Thailand, 14th – 16th century
10 cm height x 30 cm diameter
This piece is a remarkable testament to Sawankhalok ceramics, produced during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods. Heavily influenced by Chinese Longquan celadons, Thai potters developed a distinctive style of their own. These large lobed dishes were prestige pieces highly valued, widely exported throughout maritime Southeast Asia, notably to Indonesia and the Philippines.
Important hollow circular dish in stoneware with a multi-lobed corolla rim, featuring finely incised decoration under a translucent celadon glaze that is crackled, in a delicate olive-green to grayish green hue. The basin is centered by a recessed medallion marked by two concentric circles. The lip ornamented with an elegant band of incised wavy motifs simulating waves or stylized aquatic scrolls, framed by circular networks. The external wall is entirely rhythmically decorated with radiating vertical flutings evoking stylized lotus petals. The edge extends into a flared lip, subtly cut into regular lobes imitating the corolla of a blooming flower.
The reverse shows a bare base, revealing the ferruginous fired clay in a brown-orange / brick tone, typical of Si Satchanalai kiln productions. One can discern the gray circular mark left by the kiln pontil (tubular support on refractory clay).
Condition: The stoneware features a thick celadon glaze that has accumulated in places in the incision hollows, enhancing the design and revealing a tight network of original cracks. Overall in good condition for a piece of this age. Minor surface wear, small air bubbles burst in the glaze during firing, and discreet edge wear along the lip indicating its age and authenticity. Small chip and minor restoration at one spot along the lip.
