Seated Buddha in meditation
Laos, 17th-18th century
Ethnic work
Bronze with dark patina
H. 20 cm x 12.5 cm x 9 cm

Representation of the seated Buddha in meditation (Bhumisparsha mudra), the right hand touching the earth as a sign of awakening.
The body is modeled with sobriety with rounded shoulders, a high chest and a stable position on his throne.

The face with a sweet and meditative smile, almond-shaped closed eyes and finely arched lips, embodies the inner peace of the Buddha. A beautiful delicacy in the details despite the very ethnic folkloric appearance of the subject with some pronounced traits such as the nose. The elongated ears and the hair in fine regular curls, topped by a slender ushnisha flame, symbolize wisdom and spiritual elevation. The folds at the neck, slightly marked, constitute one of the essential iconographic traits in representations of the Buddha, symbolizing both wisdom, purity and the physical perfection of the awakened body.

The Buddha is seated on his throne, typical of Lao and Lan Na production. This solid base/throne is sober despite the deformation.
The bronze, patinated by time, presents an irregular patina with brown and greenish reflections, traces of original gold and mineralization on the surface.

Condition: Good overall, with some traces of mineralization and wear. Deformation at the throne.

Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
