Description from the seller

This bronze sculpture with a dark, glossy patina depicts the iconic scene of Saint Michael the Archangel defeating the demon, a famous theme in Christian tradition that symbolizes the ultimate triumph of good over evil and of spiritual light over darkness. The work draws inspiration from famous Baroque iconography, in which the archangel is portrayed as a young heavenly warrior with large wings fully spread, wearing finely detailed Roman armor and classical drapery that float dynamically to accentuate a sense of movement. The composition is built on a strong vertical and diagonal tension, with the archangel captured at the exact moment he majestically raises his right arm, gripping a sword poised to strike the decisive blow. The dramatic contrast of the scene becomes clear in the close-up detail where Saint Michael’s foot firmly yet serenely subdues the demon’s head, the latter depicted as a bearded man with bat-like wings, already subdued and toppled onto the rock of the base, completing the divine punishment.
