Montblanc Masterpiece 642 G fountain pen, with a black high-density resin body and a gold-filled cap, 127 mm long and 13 mm in diameter, dating to the second half of the 20th century, in good used condition and fully serviced as a piston filler with a 14K gold nib and iridium tip, ready to write, with all maker imprints and a box.
Description from the seller
A0000005415
The piece is machined by combining a high-density black precious resin body with a gold-filled metal cap. It is imperative to highlight the deep integrity of the body, which retains its original black and a deep, uniform shine. In the rigor of collecting, this condition is the irrefutable witness of exceptional care, confirming that the piece has not been subjected to abrupt torsions nor does it show fatigue cracks.
What is truly exceptional about this specimen is the unusual preservation of its gold-plated cap and its chased finish (the tactile pattern of fine wavy lines running across it). Unlike the vast majority of metal caps of its generation, which tend to show severe wear from continued use (handling wear or brassing), the guilloché on this piece remains notably crisp, preserving its original tactility without material loss.
The imprints (manufacturer’s engravings) corroborate this excellent cosmetic condition. The peripheral stamping on the cap band, including the legend "MONTBLANC - MASTERPIECE," exhibits outstanding depth. Likewise, the engravings stamped on the blind cap indicating the model "642" and the unusual point thickness "EEF" are perfectly legible at a glance, all crowned by the iconic white star (snowcap) intact at the top of the cap.
At the level of technical and operational architecture, the piece stands out for having undergone a rigorous functional restoration (full service), which elevates it from a display item to a fully operational instrument:
Writing group: It mounts its nib of solid 14-karat gold origin (14CT/585) bicolor. The geometry of the tines appears symmetric, free of stress cracks (fatigue cracks) and with excellent retention at its prized extra-extra fine (EEF) iridium tip for precision writing.
Filling mechanism (Piston-filler): The rotating blind cap sits flush with the barrel and operates with correct tension and no play. Unlike pieces found in a drawer, this specimen has received professional service including lubrication and refurbishing of the interior piston seal.
Operational condition: The fountain pen is in perfect working order (ready to write). The filling system generates the proper vacuum to absorb and retain ink, guaranteeing consistent capillarity and flow to its original toothed (flat feed) feed.
In synthesis, we are looking at a pen cataloged at a high collector and user grade. It is a structurally and aesthetically integral specimen, meticulously tuned, ready to be immediately integrated into the future custodian’s daily writing rotation.
It will be shipped in a courtesy box for proper preservation.
Happy bidding!
