Discover this magnificent pair of Japanese Satsuma vases, a refined work dating from the first half of the 20th century, illustrating the full mastery of traditional Japanese ceramics. Made in Japan and bearing the “Made in Japan” seal accompanied by a mark in Japanese characters under the base, these two vases form a superb set suitable for both collectors and enthusiasts of Asian art.
Each vase measures about 35 cm in height and weighs around 1 kg, offering a commanding and elegant presence. Made of glazed ceramic, they are hand-decorated with rich traditional Japanese scenes enhanced by delicate gold enrichments, in the pure Satsuma style.
The two vases are strictly identical and each features two main décors. On one face is a striking samurai in armor, depicted with remarkable precision. His richly adorned helmet, the finely detailed armor, stylized clouds, and the surrounding landscapes testify to the quality of work of the Japanese artisans.
On the other face stands a Japanese noble dressed in a traditional outfit in vivid colors, moving through a stylized natural setting. The details of the clothing, the expressions of the characters, the botanical motifs, the gold highlights, and the fine hand-painted lines offer a remarkable level of finish.
As is customary with Satsuma ceramics, the glaze shows a slight natural crazing, highly prized by collectors and characteristic of this type of production. The richly decorated borders, geometric friezes, and numerous painted details further emphasize the elegance of this pair.
The underside of each vase is marked “Made in Japan,” confirming a Japanese manufacture intended for the international market during the first half of the 20th century.
Condition
The two vases are in very good overall condition. They retain beautiful colors, well-preserved gilding, and an excellent presentation quality. No chips, cracks, or restorations are visible from the photographs.
