Description from the seller
Rare Varayoc or alcalde’s staff from Peru in the 18th century, from the Viceroyalty period of Peru.
Made of chonta wood on which bands and a silver knob are applied, as well as a buckle to hang from the belt. The twisted tip with a helical design is also entirely made of old silver. The decoration includes hand engravings with iconography of floral crosses and volutes, symbols of the union between the Catholic faith and the viceregal civil order.
In excellent condition, the piece has not been cleaned to respect the patina acquired over the centuries, which in the decorations has taken on golden tones while at the far end the patina is dark.
From a private collection.
Historical Context: In the 18th century, the Varayoc was the indispensable legal instrument for administering justice, organizing labor, and presiding over religious ceremonies. It was the supreme expression of authority in the indigenous councils of the Viceroyalty.
Dimensions: 100 x 4 x 4 cm
Weight: 430 grams.
It will be shipped protected and with a tracking code.
