Large vintage European brass and wood birdcage dating from circa 1920–1930, 80 cm high with a 30 cm diameter, featuring a brass-toned finish, an original interior with feeding cups and perches, and a two-part sliding metal base.
Description from the seller
A remarkable vintage birdcage with an elegant, almost fairy-tale appearance. Its tall cylindrical shape, domed top, brass-toned details and characterful black turned finial give the cage a stately and highly decorative presence.
The cage evokes the atmosphere of The Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen, the famous story of a Chinese emperor who discovers that the beauty of a real bird’s song is more precious than costly artificial splendour. With its graceful form and warm patina, this cage appears as though it could have come straight from the emperor’s chamber.Impressive 80 cm high European bird cage with original interior, double sliding tray and exceptional decorative presence
The elegant domed profile and tall turned finial give this cage a distinct Orientalist / pagoda-inspired appearance.
Its exact country of manufacture is unknown; it is therefore offered as a European bird cage with Asian-inspired styling.
A striking and unusually tall European bird cage, richly finished with a domed iron wire body, brass-toned details and an impressive turned wooden finial. With its slender silhouette, dark aged patina and almost Orientalist / pagoda-like presence, this is a highly decorative object with genuine period character.
Unlike many decorative later reproductions, this cage retains its functional and thoughtfully made interior. It features two authentic feeding cups, original wooden perches and a practical two-part sliding metal base. The base can be removed in two equal sections, originally designed to make replacing sand and cleaning the cage easier.
The cage is offered together with a charming hand-carved wooden bird, which adds a warm decorative touch. Please note that this bird is decorative and is not part of a mechanical automaton.
A wonderful statement piece for a conservatory, hallway, library, boutique interior, garden room or eclectic collector’s interior.
