Description from the seller

Spanish Restaurant Advertisement
Original Photograph by Michael Joseph

London, 1960s

Photo taken in the 1960s
Original vintage gelatin silver print
Printed and hand-signed by Michael Joseph
Mounted and ready for display
One-off darkroom print

A celebration of rhythm, revelry and remarkable storytelling.

Bursting with life, laughter and movement, Spanish Restaurant Advertisement captures everything that made Michael Joseph one of Britain's most inventive advertising photographers. A flamenco dancer smiles as guitarists fill the room with music, while elegantly dressed diners, dancers and musicians weave together into a wonderfully choreographed composition that feels both spontaneous and cinematic.

Joseph was renowned for creating elaborate group scenes where every face, glance and gesture played its part. Here, every element has been meticulously orchestrated - from the flower in the dancer's hair to the guitars, wine, tiled walls and bustling restaurant interior - yet the finished photograph radiates effortless warmth and authenticity.

Like his celebrated campaigns for Schweppes, White Horse and countless international brands, this image invites the viewer to linger. Each return reveals another character, another expression, another delightful detail hidden within the scene. It is a photograph that celebrates not only Spanish culture, but also Joseph's extraordinary ability to transform advertising into visual theatre.

Printed by Michael Joseph in his own darkroom, this is an authentic vintage gelatin silver print, hand-signed by the photographer. Far more than an advertisement, it is a beautifully preserved piece of photographic history and a fine example of the cinematic group compositions for which his work became so admired.

Mounted with care and ready for dispatch, this original print will be carefully packed and shipped flat with tracked delivery.

Seller's Story

My father, Michael Joseph, was a London-based advertising photographer from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s. Over those decades, he produced an extraordinary body of work—his most widely recognised image being the iconic Beggars Banquet gatefold for the Rolling Stones. My ongoing mission is to share and celebrate what we call “the other photos”: the lesser-known but no less compelling images from his archive. These are the works that lived beyond the headlines—test prints, alternative frames from major shoots, and quieter, more personal photographs, all made with his characteristic intensity, discipline, and devotion to craft. Much of their atmosphere comes from the darkroom itself. These are photographs shaped by light, timing, and handwork: intricate group compositions, sculptural still lifes, and moments that invite the viewer to linger and look again. Variety is central to the archive, and I frequently offer unique, one-off pieces that exist nowhere else. I hope you enjoy discovering my father’s work as much as I enjoy sharing it, and that you find here not just an image, but a genuine piece of photographic history. All works are dispatched carefully protected, and packed with devotion and care, appropriate to a one-off historical photographic print. US purchasers please note: Customs and excise charges are paid at source and included in the postage fee. No further charges should be due on delivery, unless regulations change.
