Description from the seller
Japanese Kutani charger in polychrome porcelain and gold, Meiji period (1868-1912), circa 1880-1900
Exceptional charger (large decorative serving plate) in Japanese Kutani porcelain, produced during the Meiji period (circa 1880-1900). Large chargers were intended to adorn prestigious homes and constituted true display pieces rather than mere dinner plates. This typology is particularly sought after by collectors of Japanese art.
This piece captivates with its entirely hand-painted decoration, richly accented with gold. The composition features a pair of pheasants moving among majestic blooming peonies, pines, and a finely treated mountainous landscape. In Japanese tradition, pheasants symbolize nobility, prosperity, and marital harmony, while peonies embody wealth and happiness.
The border, of remarkable complexity, alternates geometric reserves with brocade motifs, bearing witness to the craftsmanship of late 19th-century Japanese workshops. The finely engraved gold highlights emphasize every detail of the plumage and floral arrangements, offering a subtle relief that admirably catches the light.
The reverse presents a red-painted mark with three characters, compatible with Kutani production from the Meiji period. The whole corresponds to high-quality export porcelains produced for the Western market at that time.
A refined decorative work, combining execution quality, elegance of the decor, and historical interest, ideal for a collection of Asian art or a statement interior.
In very good condition
