Description from the seller
Beautiful Art Deco (with Art Nouveau elements) side table. This is a side table made as a smoking table. The brass top prevented any scorching to the table when cigarettes or cigars fell from the ashtray. The motif on the top is very figurative, with floral elements and in the center three elephants surrounded by stars, with a sleek chequered border on the outside, which provides a nice contrast to the round figurative and floral motifs. The figures punched into rolled brass are very symmetrical (many different motifs were punched into this type of top). The table is 65 cm tall, the upper top has a diameter of 50 cm, the lower top has a diameter of 39 cm, and the weight is about 7 kg.
The table was made in the Netherlands and dates from the 1920s. The style is Art Deco (Amsterdam School), but it already contains some Art Nouveau traits (such as the S-shaped legs). The wood used is centuries-old Dutch oak (air-dried in the traditional way). The top is thin copper/brass (thin-rolled), with an elegant punched pattern. The table is a typical product of the Amsterdam School.
The side table is entirely original (including the mounting hardware, see photos), and the top is still nicely glossy but also shows a beautiful patina. The brass can be polished to shine like gold, but that would be a pity. The edge of the brass top shows here and there a dent. This is very common with this kind of tables, and you can see it as a logical (and decorative) sign of use. Under the brass top there's a handy wooden undertop attached, not only good for the table’s sturdiness but also handy for placing magazines or books. This undertop was once glued onto a natural break seam where boards were ever joined to then saw off a round top. This break is hardly visible from the top. On the underside you can still see the discoloration traces of old-fashioned metal reinforcement strips.
This side table fits well in both sleek and romantic interiors, and is very functional, even for non-smokers. It can be used as a side table, but also, for example, as a pedestal. And of course the smoker can still safely drop a lit cigar or cigarette onto the top!
The table is expertly packed and insured for shipping.
