Parts of the Campo-del-Cielo meteorite, an iron meteorite, were first discovered in 1576 in present-day Argentina. A Spanish governor heard reports from indigenous Indians that iron had fallen from the heavens. He subsequently sent an expedition that brought back several fragments. The find location, a dry area, bore the fitting name Campo del Cielo (Field of the Sky).
