Parts of the Campo-del-Cielo meteorite, an iron meteorite, were first discovered in 1576 in what is today Argentina. A Spanish governor heard reports from indigenous Indians that iron had fallen from the sky. He then sent out an expedition that returned several fragments. The find location, a water-scarce plain, bore the fitting name Campo del Cielo (Field of the Sky).
