Kòk ki gen koulè is an original 60 × 42 cm acrylic or oil on canvas painting from Haiti by Jean-Claude Paul, signed in red and dating from 1990, depicting four roosters in a dense jungle scene.
Description from the seller
This work is a characteristic piece by the artist Jean-Claude Paul, a notable figure of Haitian naive painting.
1. The Artist: Jean-Claude Paul
Jean-Claude Paul is a Haitian artist whose main active period is at the end of the 20th century (his best-rated works often date from the 1980s and 1990s).
Style: He is part of the Haitian "Primitif" or "Naïf" art movement. Unlike academic art, this style favors spontaneity, vibrant colors and a deliberate absence of classical perspective.
Preferred themes: He is particularly known for stylized animal scenes. His favorite subjects are cats, parrots and, as in your painting, roosters.
2. Analysis of the Work
The painting you own is an oil (or acrylic) on canvas representing four roosters in a dense floral environment.
"Jungle" Composition: The space is totally saturated (the principle of horror vacui or "fear of empty space"). Flowers and fern leaves create a background tapestry that foregrounds the birds.
Rooster symbolism: In Haiti, the rooster is a powerful symbol, often representing pride, vigilance, but also elements related to rural culture and sometimes spiritual rituals.
Textile details: Observe the bodies of the roosters: Jean-Claude Paul often uses patterns of small dots, flowers or geometric lines to decorate the plumage, giving an almost "textile" or "patchwork" look to the animal.
Signature: The signature "Jean Claude Paul" in red at the bottom left is typical of his hand.
